About

History

The history of cinema in Chepstow dates back to 1911 with the opening of the original Electric Picture Hall, which became a beloved venue for silent and sound films throughout the early 20th century. In 1931, the Regal Cinema (later known as the Gaumont) opened on Welsh Street, offering a grander cinematic experience with its Art Deco design and seating for over 500 people. It was a key entertainment hub in Chepstow for several decades, but like many independent cinemas, it eventually closed due to competition from television and larger multiplexes. The building now houses a Coffee#1 café, preserving some of its historical charm.

Today...

Electric Picture Hall is dedicated to reviving Chepstow’s cinematic heritage by hosting regular pop-up cinema events, with the long-term vision of establishing a permanent, dedicated cinema for the community.
